CERN staff and users with a valid computing account have access
to the laboratory's computing facilities, under the "Rules
for Using CERN Computing Facilities".
For visitors who don't have a computing account there are still
a few X-Terminals set up in the user areas of buildings 61 and 513.
| General Purpose Computing |
 |
Basic computing environment: desktop or portable
computer, connected to the network, with office automation (e.g.,
wordprocessing), collaborative (e.g., email, Web browser), and
other applications. Provided by IT Division. |
| Administrative Computing |
| |
Administrative information services (e.g.,
electronic-document handling, toolkits for human-resources
and
budget holders, and more). |
| Physics Computing |
| |
To cover the needs of physicists (e.g., compute
farms, central data recording facilities, central data storage
facilities, software development tools, etc.). Provided by IT
Division.
For their experiments physicists develop, use, and maintain
data acquisition systems, physics analysis applications, experiment
controls systems. |
| Technical Computing |
| |
This area covers typical applications for
engineers (e.g., electronics- and mechanical CAE), and specialised
applications used for accelerator design, but also data management
applications (e.g., Oracle). |
