| Network Access |
  |
Before you come to CERN: |
| |
Make sure that up-to-date antivirus software
with live updates and applicable security patches are installed
on your computer.
To prevent virus propagation, network access will
be blocked for computers found infected or vulnerable. |
| Register the computer and
all network interfaces you intend to use (e.g., Ethernet,
wire-less) in
CERN's network database. This allows us to contact you in
case of problems. Registration is mandatory at CERN and
only registered computers will get network access. |
| Internet access
only |
Network access sockets (Portable outlets-
RJ45) are available in most offices, conference rooms,
and the user area in building 513. They support the DHCP
protocol.
|
| Wireless access (IEEE-802.11b/g) is available
in most conference rooms. The frequency bands 1, 6, and 11
are used. Set the network name (SSID) to "CERN". |
MacOSX users:
Make sure that in your settings:
System Preferences > Network > Airport
the option "Allow this computer to create networks" is UNCHECKED.
Otherwise interference with existing wire-less installations may occur and cause
disturbances. |
|
CERN Licensed
Software |
 |
CERN
does not in any case
license software for use on a portable outside CERN.
Visitors who add licensed software while at CERN are morally
bound and legally obliged to remove it when they leave CERN.

| Printing |
  |
Get the "Printer Name" from
the label on the printer (or see
"Searching
and Configuring Printers"). |

Overview and
FAQs |
| Visitors (Windows) |
See
Visitors Computers which are not in the CERN domain. |
| Visitors (Linux) |
See
http://linux.web.cern.ch/linux/docs/printing.shtml |
| MacOSX |
Use the "Print Center" to
add lpr printer. As printer address, enter the
printer name followed by .print.cern.ch (e.g., for the
printer labeled:
"513-1-US" enter "
B513-1-US.print.cern.ch"). Do not enter the printer's IP
address, this can block other users!
Download, if nececessary, the postscript printer description
file (PPD) from the vendor's site. |
| File Transfers |
 |
Visitors without a CERN computing
account |
Consider e-mail or a storage device connecting
to a USB port. |
| Visitors (CERN users) with a CERN
computing account |
The methods are machine/system dependent. Details are on
the "File Transfers" page. |
On the CERN sites Swiss power
outlets are used, you may need an
adapter.
