Group Leader: Markus Schulz

The GT (Grid Technology) group is responsible for maintaining and evolving CERN’s grid software components and grid monitoring infrastructure.

The group participates in EMI activities on Data Services, Infrastructure Services and Quality Assurance. We also monitor and drive the deployment of middleware relevant for WLCG.

GT coordinates  work related to middleware development, release preparation and operations.

The group consists of four sections:

Data Management Software

GT-DMS

The section develops, integrates, tests and supports CERN's grid data management middleware.

The File Transfer Service (FTS) is used to distribute the LHC data between participating sites for storage and analysis.

The Disk Pool Manager (DPM) is a simple and most commonly used solution for implementing and managing storage on the grid, and the LCG File Catalogue (LFC) allows the files involved to be tracked at the grid level.

These components are installed and used throughout the WLCG/EGI infrastructure.

The section is also home to CERN's contribution to D4Science, a production e-infrastructure supporting several virtual organisations.

Software Lifecycle

GT-SL

The SL Section provides services and support for Testing, Certification and Release- Management  for the grid middleware developed by the gLite product teams.

It manages the preparation of the releases (EMT) and of the software validation and packaging. The Section also runs the build, test and certification infrastructure based on ETICS and vNode services.

Tools for Operations, Monitoring

GT-TOM

The Tools for Operations and Monitoring (TOM) section is responsible for designing, developing and running tools used by WLCG for the daily operation of its production infrastructure.

The provided tools are grouped in four functional areas:

  • Service Monitoring (Nagios, SAM, SWAT, Gridview Availability reporting)

  • Production Messaging systems (ActiveMQ)

  • Grid Information Systems (BDII, Gstat, GLUE)

  • WLCG Operational portals (Gridmap, WLCG MoU reporting, WLCG installed capacity)

The TOM Section also provides tools and services to EU projects such as EGI.eu.
