If you need to re/install the operating system on your
desktop computer, you have two possibilities:
- The preferred method is to simply call the Helpdesk
on 78888 and they will send a technician to make the
installation of your choice. This applies to desktop machines as
well as standard CERN laptops and for Windows, Linux or dual
boot systems. The technicians will also ensure you have the
latest security patches and installations such that your machine
corresponds to the security team's requirements. Should your
system have been disconnected from the network due to a security
issue you are obliged to call the helpdesk so the installation
can be checked before your machine can be reconnected.
- See the related links system on how to install the machine
yourself. Remember you can
upgrade a W2K machine to XP
in a
straightforward manner. Since August 2005 you are obliged to run
Windows 2000 SP4 due to security issues
( the links explain more ), however as much as is possible we
recommend using the more secure XP/SP2 system. For those whose machines have
been disconnected for security infringements you may ONLY use
method 1 in this list.
Please note that re/installation may take a few hours.
Users who have NON-standard laptops and need help to
install a NICE system or update their security can call our User
Support specialised service on 74181 (or 16-0492) for assistance.
