Our Mission
The IT Department's mission is to provide the information
technology required for the fulfillment of the laboratory’s
mission in an efficient and effective manner through building
world-class competencies in the technical analysis,
design, procurement, implementation, operation and support of
computing infrastructure and services.
The Work We Do
The CERN IT Department is a
highly demanding computing environment,
maintaining extensive networks on both local and global scales,
pushing new technologies
to their limits and providing a neutral ground for
carrying out advanced R&D with various partners.
Our main service areas are:
- Internet Exchange - CIXP (CERN and Industry
usage)
- Telecom facilities for CERN users (phone and
mobile teleconferencing )
- Internal Network for all of CERN
- Large scale computing, data storage and archival
services
- Development of highly scalable data management
systems (Castor)
- Database services based on Oracle
- Fabric management and monitoring tools for
very large infrastructures ( Leaf, Lemon and Quator)
- Support for Operation Systems
- It user support ( Service Desk)
- EC projects on grid computing (Operations,
Coordination, development,
resource provisioning )
- WLCG
- Openlab
- Computer Security ( Proactive, Reactive and
education)
